*David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowships* **

The Society for Conservation Biology is pleased to solicit applications for the David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship Program. These Fellowships enable outstanding early-career scientists based at a United States institution to improve and expand their research skills while directing their efforts towards problems of pressing conservation concern for the United States. The Program especially encourages individuals who want to better link conservation science and theory with
pressing policy and management applications to apply. We envision that the cadre of scientists supported by the Smith Fellows Program eventually will assume leadership positions across the field of conservation science. Fellows are selected on the basis of innovation, potential for leadership and strength of proposal.

Smith post-doctoral Fellows will be awarded two years of support for applied research in the field of biological conservation. Fellowship applicants must have received their doctorate within the last five years, demonstrate high potential for innovative research and leadership in their field, and propose a research plan that creatively and effectively addresses a pressing conservation question. Each Fellow is mentored by both an academic sponsor who encourages the Fellow's continued development as a conservation scientist, and a conservation practitioner who helps to connect the Fellow and her/his research to practical conservation challenges. Fellows must secure sponsorship from an academic sponsor at an institution in the United States well-suited to carrying out the proposed research. Each fellow will choose a field mentor with expertise and experience in "on-the-ground" application of conservation science and who is associated with a government agency, nongovernmental organization, or other conservation organization. Applicants who arrange for mentors and research sites before submission of their application provide the review panel with strong evidence of initiative and leadership, and help to ensure that proposed research is
relevant to conservation practices. Fellowships are spent primarily at the sponsoring academic institution or at the location best suited to conducting the research; up to four weeks each year will be spent in professional development training.

Smith Fellows in 2011 will be selected for their leadership potential, and their ability to conduct innovative applied research that promises to improve the effectiveness of conservation practice. Emphasis is placed on research that will advance conservation science. Research approaches may include comparative studies, synthetic analyses across sites, experimental or observational studies, applied modeling, or any combination.

Individuals with outstanding, innovative skills in research and communication are encouraged to submit Fellowship applications with research proposals aimed at the above or any other issue relevant to conservation biology. The Program expects to select four Fellows in January 2011 for appointments to start sometime between March-September 2011. Fellowship awards include an annual salary of $50,000, benefits, and generous travel and research budgets.

    *Eligibility and Award Terms*

Eligible individuals must have completed their doctorate within the past five years or by the time the award is made in 2011. Applicants who have not yet completed their doctorate must clearly indicate on the application the date the degree is expected.

Each Fellow will receive an annual salary of $50,000 plus benefits, with the post-doctoral position expected to run for two consecutive years. In addition to the stipend, each Fellow receives a travel budget of over $8,000 and a research fund of more than $32,000 across the 2-year fellowship period.

Fellows will spend up to four weeks per year during their fellowship attending orientation and training events. These offerings provide opportunities to cultivate professional networks and to gain better understanding of applied research needs. Fellows will participate as a group in three or more Program-sponsored meetings, conferences, or professional development events each year. Each Fellow also will consult with their mentor(s) to identify and secure additional opportunities to
learn about problems and issues in applied conservation. Beyond these obligations, Fellows are expected to pursue the research outlined in their proposal full-time.

Fellows will be employed by the sponsoring academic institution. The Program will provide up to 5% of the total indirect costs as overhead reimbursement to this institution. Second-year renewal of the fellowship is contingent upon satisfactory progress (including but not limited to participation in orientation, training, and professional development events) as well as timely completion of detailed interim and first-year activity reports.

*Deadlines and Contact Information* All application materials, including letters from sponsors and references, must be received by Society for Conservation Biology to smithfellows@ conbio.org by 5pm EST on *September 24, 2010*. Long time numerical integration of planetary systems

    Starting date : immediate

Qualification : Ph D degree in mathematics, computer sciences, theoretical physics, or Celestial Mechanics.

    Institution : IMCCE,CNRS-UMR8028, Paris Observatory
    77 Av Denfert-Rochereau, 75014 Paris, France
Contact : Dr. Jacques Laskar (laskar@imcce.fr) (Jacques Laskar)

The Long time numerical integration of the Solar System has been a challenge since the onset of the computer era, and although it is now possible to numerically integrate a realistic model of the evolution of the Solar system over its age, that is over 5 Gyr in positive or negative time from now, many questions remains. In particular, the chaotic behavior of the planetary orbits induces an exponential divergence of nearby planetary
orbits which increases the initial error by a factor of 10 every 10 millions of years. It is thus practically impossible to provide a precise solution for the planet orbits over more than a few tens of million of years. It is nevertheless important for the reconstitution of the past climate on Earth to extend these solutions as far as possible in the past. On the other
hand, over billions of years, planetary collisions become possible, which imposed to devise numerical integrators that well behave in the vicinity of a collision.

The two post doc positions are proposed on the various aspects of the elaboration of highly accurate numerical integrators for planetary orbits, in presence or not of collisions, using sequential or parallel methods.

The candidates should have strong background in applied mathematics and computer programming (in C or FORTRAN).

Expertise in one or several of the following topics will be also highly appreciated

    • Numerical integration methods, and in particular geometric or symplectic integrators.
    • Parallel computing (MPI, SMP, or GPU computing)
    • Classical Celestial Mechanics

    2 Positions:

LTIP1: 8 to 12 months in the ANR-ATSCM project. No constraints of ationality or age.
LTIP2: 24 months in the Marie Curie GTS_Next Initial Training Network .

The applicant cannot be French and need to start the position within one year after his PhD.

Please send your application by email to Jacques Laskar (laskar@imcce.fr)
Your email should contain a pdf-file as an attachment with the following information:

    • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
    • A short description of your qualifications and experience (publications, theses,…)
    • A letter describing concisely your scientific interests
    • Names and email-addresses of two scientists willing to provide references.

Postdoc in Homogeneous Catalysis – Eindhoven University of Technology

    Postdoc in Homogeneous Catalysis

A vacancy for a postdoc is available in the field of Homogeneous Catalyst immobilization and recycling within the homogeneous catalysis and coordination chemistry group at Eindhoven University of Technology

The Homogeneous Catalysis Group offers a dynamic international research environment. Research activities span a wide range from fundamental questions to application oriented research. In an integrated approach we are interested in the development of efficient and sustainable catalytic conversions. In mechanistic studies we strive for a deep understanding of chemo-, regio-, and stereoselective processes on the molecular level, employing (in situ) spectroscopic methods and kinetic studies. Ligand and catalyst design, synthesis, and characterization are an important part in this process.

This fundamental insight and knowledge is employed to develop new catalytic conversions and to improve existing routes towards more sustainable processes (e.g. feed-stock diversification and renewables). Catalyst testing and reaction optimization is strongly supported by state of the art automated and parallel testing facilities.

For the applicability of homogenous catalysts, separation and recycling are key issues. We aim at the development of generic methods for catalyst immobilization and compartmentalization, towards continuous operation, employing two-phase catalysis and membrane separation techniques.

Typically in this field catalyst development and reaction/reactor engineering go hand in hand. Actual projects span from fine chemical applications like asymmetric catalysis for fragrances and pharmaceuticals to large scale intermediates like amines and aldehydes for the polymer, detergent and lubricant sector. Of course this broad range of activities has led to numerous international cooperations with academic and industrial partners.
We are actively participating in a range of European research networks and initiatives.

    Project
The project is part of a European Research and Training Network within FP7 deadling with homogeneous catalyst immobilization and recycling in the context of process intensification. The project, NanoHost, Homogeneous Supported Catalyst Technologies: the sustainable approach to highly-selective, fine chemicals production is a joint effort of 7 partners and 3 associated partners.

The candidate will focus on the synthesis and application of nanostructured organic/inorganic hybrid materials for molecular weight enlarged catalysts (MWE catalysts) in a homogeneous catalytic reaction of industrial relevance. MWE catalysts will be prepared, characterized, and applied in continuously operated reactors equipped with a membrane filtration unit for catalyst compartmentalization.

Relevant kinetic and thermodynamic data will be acquired in multi-batch and continuously operated reactor setups. Based on these initial studies an improved loop reactor unit will be designed, modelled, and built in a close cooperation with other partners.

State-of-the-art equipment and expertise for research in homogeneous catalysis and catalyst immobilization is present (HP-autoclaves, membrane filtration units, Schlenk lines, glove-box, analytical and preparative HPLC, (high pressure) NMR and IR spectroscopy, etc.). Training in a wide range of supplementary skills is offered by the host institution and by special training workshops and secondments arranged by the network.

    Profile
We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic postdoc with a master degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, with solid knowledge and practical skills in organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry or homogeneous catalysis. You also need to meet up the requirements for the eligibility of the researchers from Nanohost. You can look for more information on the website.
Applicants are expected to have excellent skills in preparative organic and organometallic chemistry and have good analytical and communicative skills. You are creative and think for yourself, fluent in English and you are a team player.

    Appointment and Salary
We offer a challenging job at a dynamic and ambitious university. The gross monthly salary in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities (CAO NU) starts with 2861,-. Besides this, the TU/e has an excellent package of attractive benefits for employees, a child-care facility, and a modern sports complex. Assistance for finding accommodation can be given.

    Information
For more detailed information about this vacancy you can contact Prof. D. Vogt (d.vogttue.nl; tel.: +31-40-2472730).
