The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EWI) is where Information and Communication Technology are created at the University of Twente. ICT is more than communication. In almost every consumer product, mathematics, electronics and computer technology are present, and ICT now contributes to all of societies' activities. It is no longer about gadgets that we do or do not want to use. The real integration of ICT is just beginning. What we need is more intelligence in our systems and improvement of their natural interaction with humans.

    The challenge
The Group of Semiconductor Components is an internationally leading research group on novel integrated circuit devices, with a strong track record on component reliability research. We conduct multidisciplinary research ranging from chemistry via physics to electrical engineering. The chosen candidate will end up as an expert on the physics and long-term behavior of silicon-based high voltage transistors. He or she will work closely together with the Dutch company NXP Semiconductors manufacturing these devices. These devices play a key role in many modern electronic systems such as hybrid cars.
Reliability is of essential importance in such transistors. This project aims to determine and investigate the main degradation mechanisms that are responsible for failure of high voltage transistor switches. The research team will approach the challenge by experimentation, analysis and modeling. Based on the findings, methods to increase reliability will be defined and tested. During the project, these methods will be implemented in novel high voltage switch designs with increased lifetime, which will be manufactured at NXP. Moreover accelerated lifetime tests will be developed that can be used for product qualification. By improving switch design and by preventing degradation this project will help to pave the way for increasing the performance and reliability of high voltage switches. The project is cofunded by PointOne (www.pointone.nl) and NXP Semiconductors (www.nxp.com).

PhD researcher: Biomechatronic Design and Control of a Heavy-Lifting Aid

PhD researcher: Biomechatronic Design and Control of a Heavy-Lifting Aid

    http://www.utwente.nl/vacatures/??VacatureID=163376

    De uitdaging / The challenge
Would you like to contribute to the design of a state-of-the-art- lifting device that will be a breaktrough for both care enviroments and industry?

The Biomechanical Engineering groups at the University of Twente (UT) and Delft University of Technology (TUD) aim to realize a breakthrough in physically support humans with heavy lifting, by designing a shared-control assistive human-machine device. Most likely, this will be a strong external skeleton that can be easily connected to the arm(s) and potentially the trunk and legs. This device will used in care environments (hospital, rehabilitation centers) to lift patients in and out of bed and in industrial environments to handle heavy, variable loads. This development project is part of larger project named H-Haptics that is funded by the Dutch government.

    Background
Although many assistive devices exist which can help in moving heavy objects, none are flexible enough to be used without problems in the care industry. Most devices are bulky, limited in lifting loads, unable to handle varying loads, slow in operation, or need extensive training before they can be used. Most suffer from all of these and are therefore mostly ignored by the user. The aim of the project is to show that by using haptic shared control, the force to the operator can be designed based on his/her motion control properties, leading to intuitive more intuitive assistance. For him/her, the devices will need to immediately follow the desired movements of the arm and assist at the moment it is needed.

    Team
You will be working in a project team consisting of two PhD's, two engineers and several other scientists at both Univeristy of Twenet and Delft University. The team will work in close cooperation in order to exchange ideas on control, actuation, and shared control both within the project and with other H-Haptics projects. The PhD students will be supervised by dr.ir. Arno Stienen (UT) and dr.ir. David Abbink (TUD), with prof.dr.ir. Frans van der Helm (TUD) as promotors. Bachelor and master students will also be involved in the project and the PhD students will have an important role in the daily supervision of these.

    Your role
Another PhD working on the same project at the University of Delft will design an initial prototype system and subsequently use it as a testbed on which to design, implement and evaluate concepts for haptic shared control. A mechanical engineer will assist in design and construction of the initial prototype. Your role will be to design and build a second, more advance, powered prototype, supported by the mechatronic engineer. Apart from the actual work in the project, you will be superivising bachelor and master students that are also contributing to this project.

    Ons aanbod / Our offer
We offer a scientific education on a multidisciplinary subject. The full-time assignment is for period of 4 years. The candidates are expected to finish the project with a PhD thesis and disseminate the results through patents (if applicable), publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences. Salary will be € 2042,-gross per month in the first year, leading up to € 2612, - gross per month in the last year.

    Uw profiel / Your profile
We are looking for a researcher with a master degree in (Bio-)Mechanical or Control Engineering or a closely related field, with outstanding results. PhD positions in Systems Security (VU Amsterdam University)

    http://www.cs.vu.nl/~herbertb/ad.html

Vacancies: PhD positions in Systems Security

The computer science department of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is looking for candidates for PhD positions in Systems Security. Only the very best students with demonstrable experience and affinity with systems security need apply. Note the emphasis -- we are are looking for people in systems (as opposed to, say, cryptographers or formal methods people--but if you combine these skills that is fine). Fear of low-level languages like C and assembly probably means you should not apply. Love of security, operating systems, and hacking counts as a plus.

Academic requirements: a degree (or equivalent) in computer science or closely related field. Normally, the expected degree for a PhD is a master degree -- but in some countries rules are different. When in doubt: ask.

    Research area

The research area is systems security in a broad sense, but specifically the students will be involved in dynamic analysis and reverse engineering of binary software (both malware and goodware). A high-level description of the project can be found here. Candidates are encouraged to read our NDSS paper on reverse engineering data structures.

    A PhD at the VU

In the Netherlands, PhD students do not pay tuition fees and are employed by the university. Their salaries are conform the university's standards. (Compared to other countries, PhD students salaries in the Netherlands are typically considered reasonably generous.)

Amsterdam is one of the nicest and liveliest cities in Europe. For foreign students, it has the advantage that it is within easy reach of all major airports. Research-wise, the Computer Systems Section at the VU was rated the highest possible score on all criteria in a recent nation-wide research assessment. Its staff is geared towards quality research and publishes in the top tier venues. The section hosts two ERC grant winners.

    Dates

As we are looking for up to 4 students, we plan to evaluate applications in two rounds. For the first round, we need the applications in before the 1st of May 2011.
